In September 1976 the first Space Shuttle, Enterprise, was unveiled by NASA.

Construction in the Enterprise began on the first orbiter on June 4, 1974 Designated OV-101, it was originally planned to be named Constitution. However, a write-in campaign caused it to be renamed after the Starship Enterprise, featured on the television show Star Trek. On September 17, 1976, Enterprise was rolled out of Rockwell’s plant at Palmdale, California.

The Space Shuttle is the first orbital spacecraft designed for reusability. It carries payloads to low Earth orbit, provides crew rotation for the International Space Station (ISS), and performs servicing missions. The orbiter can also recover satellites and other payloads from orbit and return them to Earth. Each Shuttle was designed for a projected lifespan of 100 launches or 10 years’ operational life, although this was later extended.

On September 17, 1976, Enterprise was rolled out of Rockwell's plant at Palmdale, California. In recognition of its fictional namesake, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and most of the cast of the original series of Star Trek were on hand at the dedication ceremony.

It's size is put into perspective

Enterprise was stored at the Smithsonian's hangar at Washington Dulles International Airport before it was restored and moved to the newly built Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles International Airport, where it is the centerpiece of the space collection.

This early morning skyscape was captured last week on August 4th, looking northeast across calm waters in the Turn Basin at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. In a striking contrast in motion, the space shuttle Discovery, mounted on a massive transporter, creeps toward launch pad 39A at less than two miles per hour, while a brilliant meteor streaks through the sky traveling many miles per second. Of course, this week skywatchers have seen many similar meteor streaks during the annual Perseid meteor shower. But the meteor flashing above Discovery is not likely to be one of the Perseids because its path doesn't point back to that shower's radiant. Seen here near picture center, brilliant planet Venus still dominates the sky as the Morning Star, though. Yellowish tinted Mars lies near the top of the frame and Orion's red giant star Betelgeuse is toward the right. (http://www.nasa.gov)

“Tubes” as they are known are a surfers lifeblood and a thing of natural beauty. We salute these adventurous photographers who, one of whom is named Clark Little, armed with a waterproof camera and perfect timing, were able to snap these incredible pictures.

If woken by a tumultuous storm outside, most of us will wisely pull the covers over our heads and try to go back to sleep. For one plucky photographer though, it was the chance to dash outside and capture some truly electric images.

Frank Fennema from California made the trip from his home in Tiburon down to the Golden Gate Bridge and with perfect timing captured the Golden Gate Bridge, shrouded by fog, getting lit up by fork lightning. More pictures here…

The 1920 dynamite attack that took place on Wall Street just steps from the NYSE and the spot where George Washington was sworn in was one of the worst attacks on U.S. soil in history but is all but forgotten today.

Here is a little historical crash course about “The Corner” as the incident became known.

At noon on September 16, 1920 a horse-drawn wagon passed by lunchtime crowds on Wall Street in New York City. The wagon then stopped across the street from the headquarters of the J.P. Morgan Inc. bank at 23 Wall Street, on the Financial District’s busiest corner. Inside, 100 pounds of dynamite with 500 pounds of heavy, cast-iron sash weights exploded in a timer-set detonation, sending the slugs tearing through the air. The horse and wagon were blasted into small fragments. More than thirty people were killed and most of the victims were messengers, stenographers, clerks and brokers. It caused over $2 million in property damage and wrecked most of the interior spaces of the Morgan building.

On September 15, 1835 the British navel ship H.M.S. Beagle landed at Galapagos Island carrying a young scientist who would go on to change the way the world looked at the development of life on Earth.

Charles Darwin traveled with the H.M.S. Beagle for nearly five years. It was his time aboard the ship and the sights that he saw, most notably Galapagos Island that helped him formulate his greatest work, the publication of On the Origin of Species in 1859.

We salute Darwin’s Galapagos journey by looking at the island from above.

Charles Darwin’s five-year voyage on H.M.S. Beagle has become legendary, as insights gained by the bright young scientist on his trip to exotic places greatly influenced his masterwork, the book On the Origin of Species. Darwin didn’t actually formulate his theory of evolution while sailing around the world aboard the Royal Navy ship. But the exotic plants and animals he encountered challenged his thinking and led him to consider scientific evidence in new ways. (via about.com)

They don’t hold White House lunches the way they used to at the beginning of the century. All these men were named Theodore Roosevelt.

On September 14th, 108 years ago President of the United States William McKinley died after an assassination attempt on September 6, 1901 and was succeeded by Theodore Roosevelt who went on to become, as many opinion polls suggest, one of the top five greatest American presidents in history.

After an 13 day, 20 hour, 53 minute mission that covered  5.7-million miles the Space Shuttle Discovery landed at Edwards Air Force Base in California’s Mojave Desert.

The Shuttle was originally scheduled to land at the Kennedy Space Center on Thursday but directors had to delay the landing due to deteriorating weather on the east coast. After another day of bad weather in Florida NASA decided to aim for a mid-afternoon landing at Edwards Air Force Base in California’s Mojave Desert on Saturday the 12th.

The Space Shuttle Discovery took off on August 28, 2009 on a mission to deliver supplies to the International Space Station repair the Hubble Space Telescope, as we can see from these specticular new pictures shot by the Hubble Space Telescope the mission was a success.

When a two-year-old Tiger Woods appeared on national TV it was obvious he was destined for greatness.

On Saturday, September 12th Tiger Woods had one of the most dominating rounds of golf in his career. Woods shot a 9-under 62 setting the Cog Hill course record and effectively blowing away his BMW Championship competition.

Woods is on his way to winning the 2009 FedEx championship and is well on his way to becoming the greatest golfer of all time. Being that we witness history every time Woods hit the course (think the modern day Babe Ruth) we’ve decided to give you his ten greatest shots.

Venice, the “City of Water,” is located in northeast Italy, spanning 118 islands in the Venetian Lagoon. Buildings in Venice were constructed on wood piles driven into the mud, sand and clay layers under the lagoon. Many of the buildings in Venice still sit on these piles driven more than a thousand years ago.

During the 2008 Venice Film Festival Dan Kitwood, an entertainment photographer from Getty, took the opportunity to make some aerial images of Venice.
